About This Quote

The Essenes, or the Essenes, were a Jewish sect that existed throughout the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. They were known as the first monastic order. The Essenes had a strong belief in the Sacred Writings and saw themselves as protectors of the written word. They were known as the “guardians of the Scrolls” and would guard them with their lives. When they found out that the Romans were planning to destroy the Temple, they evacuated the scrolls and hid them in various locations.
